A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
